What You Didn't Know About Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis in the US

Approximately 14 million people in the United States are affected by knee osteoarthritis (knee OA). While it is most common in older adults, over half of those affected are under the age of 65 and 2 million are younger than 45. This is a very common condition we see in our clinic on a regular basis and can present with a variety of symptoms, such as decreased range of motion and mobility, pain and/or stiffness. Other symptoms may include swelling, popping or cracking, and tenderness around the knee.

Does this sound like you?

Most of our patients come to us with pain or difficulty walking, going up or down stairs, squatting, or standing up from a low surface like a couch or sofa. They may notice that they are avoiding activities they used to enjoy such as walking in the evening and are worried about keeping up with family and friends while traveling. They will also report stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for a long period of time.

What causes it?

Knee OA is caused by inflammation and degeneration of the knee joint and may worsen over time. The progression of the condition can be affected by a variety of factors, including body mass index (BMI), your bony structure, genetics, muscle strength and your activity level. You may also be more likely to develop knee OA due to a previous traumatic injury to your knee. However, there are many things that can help slow down the progression, decrease your pain and improve your mobility.

Treating OA with Physical Therapy

Research has shown time and again that physical therapy is an effective solution in treating knee OA. As movement experts, we work with people to restore movement, relieve pain, improve strength and prevent disability. During your initial evaluation with us, we will assess your range of motion, strength and flexibility, as well as your ability to perform certain activities. From there, you and your physical therapist will come up with a plan together to help you reach your goals. Whether your goal is to return to a sport you enjoy, get around your house easier and without pain, or to avoid/prolong the need for a knee replacement and everything in between, we can help you get there.
