3 Ways To Avoid Another Year Frustrated With Back Pain

January 7, 2019

This year thousands of people will likely suffer with yet another episode of low back pain.  You know what I mean - the kind of stabbing pain that takes your breath away and leaves you hunched over for the next few hours and stiff for weeks to follow.  It’s no coincidence that low back problems are the #1 reason folks look to a PT for help.  Staying out of back pain is a lot like trying to keep weight off.  Getting OUT of pain isn’t the tough part.  STAYING out of pain is what most folks will struggle with over the years.  Isn’t that what they say about losing weight?  Shedding those first few pounds may have its challenges but it’s nothing compared to keeping them from coming back!  So, here are a few golden nuggets to keep in mind if you don’t want to find yourself laid up with an aching back in 2019.

1. Limit Your Sitting To No More Than 30 Minutes

Hours of idle sitting isn't a good idea for several health reasons, but for folks who have had low back problems it can be a huge issue.  When you sit for hours on end, you're compressing the disc and joints in your lower back significantly more than if you were to be standing.  If you have to do a lot of sitting, be sure to get up and walk around at least once every 30 minutes and go for a more supportive chair over a big fluffy sofa...this will help keep your back happy.

2. Use Care When Lifting

If this isn't the #1 reason most of my patients initially hurt their back, it's a close second.  This may sound silly, but it could take weeks to master this skill for someone who has injured their back.  Even if you feel confident that you have the correct form, it can be a worrisome task when you want to lift something of any weight.  If you're careful, you can identify when and where your back feels weak and make the necessary adjustments, but if you're not mindful EVERY time you lift and you're not aware that there IS a strategy to this, you'll end up quickly re-injuring your back.

3. Make Time To Take Care Of Yourself

If you've ever dealt with back problems in the past and you DON'T want them wrecking your lifestyle or threatening your mobility, you absolutely MUST make time to properly care for your body.  If you ignore it, I guarantee it won't make the problem go away.  In fact, it will most likely get worse and the pain will become more frequent.  People who are successful at keeping their bodies happy are the ones who have made their health a priority.  Make time to do the things that keep your spine in good health.  Don't know what those things are?  We're happy to help!
